Software Tools

ATS staff provides support to Franklin & Marshall faculty and students for the following instructional media production software and course materials distribution applications. These software tools are available for curricular use on the Digital Media Creation Stations in ATS. QuickStarts are available.

Where noted, self-paced learning materials are available.

Media Production:

iTunespoint:
iTunes is audio software that enables you to organize and listen to audio files on a computer as well as convert audio file types and burn a CD.
 
iPhotopoint:
iPhoto is an image software that enables you to import and view photos from a digital camera with firewire capabilities. iPhotos offers basic image editing tools and the ability to send images through email and/or generate a web page of the images.
 
iMoviepoint:
iMovie enables you to import and view video clips from a digital video camera with firewire capabilities. iMovie also enables you to prepare a quicktime movie for DVD creation as well as converting VHS to digital format. iMovie offers editing tools, numerous transitions and effects.
 
iDVDpoint:
iDVD enables you to create and design a DVD from a quicktime movie or a collection of still images as a slideshow.
 
QuickTime Propoint:
QuickTime Pro is a multi-platform media player. It is also a media-authoring tool that can be used to create everything from simple slide shows to complex audio and video editing and encoding.

SoundStudio
SoundStudio is an audio recording and editing tool that enables you to record and edit two-channel audio. SoundStudio is used to digitize audiocassettes

 

Media Distribution:

Blackboard @ F&M
Blackboard is a web-based software enabling faculty to provide online delivery of course-based instructional materials and communication tools for students enrolled in College courses.


UNSUPPORTED SOFTWARE

The following software tools are available for curricular use on the Digital Media Creation Stations, but are NOT SUPPORTED by ATS staff.

Media Production (unsupported software):

Adobe Photoshop Elementspoint:
Photoshop Elements is an easy-to-use, yet powerful image-editing, photo-retouching, and Web-graphics tool. Photoshop Elements offers features designed specifically for users who want to create professional-quality images for print and the Web.
 
Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop is the professional image-editing standard. Photoshop delivers a comprehensive environment for professional designers and graphics producers to create sophisticated images for print, the Web, and other media.
 
Macromedia Dreamweaver
Dreamweaver MX is a professional HTML editor for designing, coding, and developing websites, web pages, and web applications. The visual editing features in Dreamweaver let you quickly create pages without writing a line of code. If you prefer to code by hand, however, Dreamweaver also includes many coding-related tools and features.
 
LiveSlideshow
LiveSlideShow enables you to easily take your digital photos and transform them into presentations. Being a QuickTime based product, slide show movies created with LiveSlideShow can easily be shared between Macintosh and Windows computer systems.

Media Distribution/Online Collaboration (unsupported software):

Apple iChat AV
iChat AV is provides opportunities for instant messaging (IM) as well as audio and video conferencing and file exchange.
Skype
Skype a peer-to-peer (P2P) internet telephony (VoIP) network provided by all combined users of the free multi-platform desktop software application. What's that mean? You can think of Skype as a big, free Internet telephony company. Skype users can speak to other Skype users for free, call traditional telephone numbers for a fee (SkypeOut), receive calls from traditional phones for a fee (SkypeIn), and receive voicemail messages for a fee. Additional capabilities include instant messaging (IM) and file exchange. Skype has 52 million users world-wide.
