Jay M. Anderson, The Richard S. and Ann B. Barshinger Professor of Computer Science, at Franklin and Marshall is being showcased for his continued integration of technology into his teaching.
Professor Anderson received College funding to design and develop QuickTime movies to illustrate some algorithms from computational geometry. In addition, Professor Anderson has served on the Committee on Academic Technology. Throughout his tenure at Franklin and Marshall College, Professor Anderson has utilized many creative technologies in support of his curriculum. In a Foundations course, Forbidden Knowledge, Professor Anderson utilizes eDisk extensively. He digitizes small video clips that have significant importance to the course material and stores them on eDisk, where students have around-the-clock access. These technologies have enabled Professor Anderson to actually teach a course in a way he otherwise would not have attempted. Professor Anderson also utilizes Blackboard, the College's course management system. For Professor Anderson, this allows almost instantaneous feedback, a feature the students enjoy. "Homework is virtually done without paper. Students find it convenient, I find it convenient. They get immediate feedback. I utilize this service ever day, every month, every semester."
Blackboard organizes course material. "It is an index of sort, for web materials." Materials would have to be re-printed and handed out continuously, if not for Blackboard, and subsequently according to Anderson, "I probably would not do it." As a result of his creativeness, Professor Anderson has been able to overlap three different technologies into his teaching. The use of digital video vignettes, the 24/7 access of eDisk, and the organization of Blackboard has empowered students. ![]() |
