Faculty Showcase - Glenn Stevens

Glenn L. Stevens, Associate Professor of Finance in Business, Organizations & Society at Franklin and Marshall, was an early adopter of the College's course management system, Blackboard. More recently, Professor Stevens, in collaboration with his students, has also implemented the use of a student created and managed website for specific use by those enrolled in a course focusing on portfolio management.

Professor Glenn Stevens

Professor Stevens' decision to utilize Blackboard was based on two main principles: the ability to access and post course materials remotely via internet access and the ability to easily update course materials from home and campus. Professor Stevens utilizes Blackboard on a daily basis as a component to all of his courses.

Use of Blackboard varies from posting numerous documents for access by students, communicating with students via the email feature, and utilizing the gradebook component. Professor Stevens feels the gradebook component is a very attractive feature to students. He states that it is not unreasonable for a student to complete an assessment at 10 AM and log-in to their Blackboard course at 10 PM to access their grade. Blackboard has become the focus of contact and interaction between the student and himself as the instructor.

SMIP Website

In addition to utilizing Blackboard, Professor Stevens integrates a student created and managed website for use by those enrolled in his Portfolio Management course. The Student Managed Investment Portfolio (SMIP) website is the primary outlet of communication for the course. The site allows student, alumni, and public access to course materials as well as forums for remote collaboration. Real-time quotes of the current portfolio have also been integrated into the site for up-to-date access of data. Professor Stevens feels the response that has come from students regarding his use of technology has been generally positive. He is confident that technology has improved the relationship with students because they have immediate access to course-related information.
