What kind of network
connection do I need?
The audio and/or video prepared as On-Demand can be listened to or viewed with
a high-speed Broadband connection, DSL connection or an F&M campus
network connection. There are actually 2 versions of each audio/video file
on the
server, each optimized for a different speed network connection. The faster
your network connection, the higher quality experience you will receive.
If you have a fast network connection (DSL, cable modem, UM campus network),
be sure that the QuickTime "Connection Speed" (see below) is set
to 256Kbps or faster in order to make sure you receive the highest quality
audio file.

I have a fast enough network connection, but the audio and/or video won't
play, or it plays for a little while and then stops.
When you click on the audio and/or video, your computer requests the appropriate
file based on the "Connection Speed" setting in your QuickTime Settings
control panel.
- Quit QuickTime Player if it is running.
- Go to the QuickTime Settings control panel, click the Connection tab and
set "Connection
Speed" to 256Kbps DSL/Cable (or faster) depending on your method of
connecting to the internet.
- Close the control panel, then try playing the online audio again.
I have installed QuickTime but still get the message "To watch this
movie, you will need QuickTime 4 (or later) and a 56k modem (or faster) network
connection." when I click on the play button.
Check the QuickTime Settings for "Connection Speed" (see above) and
be sure that it is set to "56k Modem" or faster.

I have a 56K modem and my QuickTime connection speed settings are right but
the audio still won't stream. What's wrong?
Check the actual speed of the network connection your modem is making... a
56K modem may get a connection of anything from 30K - 50K depending on a variety
of factors. If your connection speed is not at least 38Kbps, you will not be
able to reliably listen to the streamed music.

I have a software/hardware firewall installed on my computer/network, can
I still listen to the streamed audio?
Yes, but you will need to have the "Streaming Transport" settings
configured correctly:
- Go to the QuickTime Settings control panel, click the Connection tab and
then click the "Transport Setup..." button.
- If you DO NOT have a firewall installed, the transport setting should be "Use
UDP, RTSP Port ID:554". This is the most efficient transport method,
but it will not work if you have to get through a firewall.
- If you DO have a firewall on your network connection, streaming transport
should be set to "Use HTTP Port ID:80".
- Close the control panel, then try playing the online audio again.

The movie stops playing for unknown reasons?
Check to make sure that your computer is no set to sleep:
- Go to System Preferences/Energy Save and set the sleep option to never.
- Or go to System Preferences/Expose and set Disable Screen Saver to a hot
corner.
